54040 | Dynabrade Rotary-to-DA Adapter

The Dynabrade 54040 Rotary-to-DA Adapter features 5/8-11 female thread on one end, and 5/16-24 thread on the other. Overall height: 1-11/16" (42mm). Heavy-duty steel, chrome plated

These rotary extensions are scratch-built, one at a time. I mention this for a couple of reasons: 1. The fact that they are hand built does not mean they any better than a machined version... I simply do not possess the machinery required to make them in small batches. 2. Although they spin very close to true, they do not always spin absolutely true. This is because the threaded components used to make the extensions come from several sources and consequently, the thread tolerances vary enough to cause a bit of wobbling upon tightening. To combat this, each extension's components are tightened together, tested for trueness, and if there is excessive wobble... the parts are loosened, and re-tightened until the everything spins as close to true as possible. This seemingly simple task can take as little a few minutes, or a painfully embarrassing amount of time. If the combination does not deliver an acceptable trueness, the stud and nut are tossed into the reject pile, and a new extension begins. Four sections make up the extension: 1. Threaded Adapter. Heavy-duty, chrome plated steel. A Dynabrade® 54040 Rotary-to-DA Adapter screws onto any rotary polisher that features 5/8-11 thread. Once installed, the adapter accepts any size of backing plate that uses 5/16-24 thread (which is a very common thread size and pitch). 2. Threaded , which often use enables this device to be much skinnier than a typical rotary extension. The short version is the perfect length for all-around polishing use. The long version comes in handy for hard-to-reach zones. Both feature a free-spinning section of stainless steel tubing that allows the extension to be stabilized by grasping it with a finger and thumb. The main thing is to get the head of the machine far enough away from the small backing plates, so they’re easy to see… and then if course the length of the extension is useful for reaching into confined areas. The extensions include inexpensive 1”, 2”, and 3” plates. The main piece of the extension is the Dynabrade 54040 Rotary to DA Adapter, which I buy from various places ($42-$49). All other components are stainless steel. The center section of tubing is free-spinning, enabling stabilization of the extension using a finger & thumb. Set includes a trio of Velcro Backing Plates that screw into the end of the extension. The extension measures approximately 6-1/8” in length.54040 | Dynabrade Rotary-to-DA Adapter

The Dynabrade 54040 Rotary-to-DA Adapter features 5/8-11 female thread on one end, and 5/16-24 thread on the other. We buy them from various online sources, not wholesale. Prices range from $40-$55 (which is 2-3 times what they cost 5-6 years ago), which accounts for a majority of the cost of parts.

Rotary Polishing Extension Kit. Includes a trio of backing plates.

For more than two decades, my passion for the craft of polishing has inspired me to make adapters and extensions for all sorts of polishing machines. Some were made by request, while others were conjured up because I wanted to use a non-original backing plate that would not install onto a machine... or once installed, the rotating assembly would become ridiculously out of balance, requiring additional mass to restore usability.

These particular extensions are built by hand, simply because I do not possess the machinery required to make them in bulk. Sizing, shaping, and polishing of components is accomplished using typical work tools. A hacksaw blade cuts lengthy threaded studs to size; hand files and a bench grinder help to rough-shape & debur hardware. Grinder-mounted cotton wheels are used to polish stainless steel hardware to a high luster. Quite often though, polishing work is accomplished using various grades of sandpaper that range in coarseness from P320 to P5000 grades. In a bit of irony... my rotary polisher serves double-duty as a handheld lathe!

Although these extensions spin very close to true, they do not always spin absolutely true. This is because the threaded components used to make the extensions come from several sources. Consequently, the thread tolerances vary just enough to cause a bit of wobbling upon tightening. To combat this, each extension is assembled, and tested for trueness. If wobble is visible, the parts are loosened, minutely adjusted, and then re-tightened until the everything spins as close to true as possible.

Product Features:

Dynabrade® Rotary-to-DA Adapter | When installed onto rotary polishers featuring 5/8-11 thread, this adapter enables backing plates utilizing 5/16-24 thread to be screwed directly into the adapter. Instead of a backing plate, we mount a long piece of stainless steel threaded stud into the adapter, which extends the backing plate away from the machine.

Extension Rod | A stainless steel threaded stud runs the full length of the extension. Measuring only 5/16" in diameter, it is literally half the diameter of the 5/8" mounting stud protruding from typical rotary polishers.

Stabilizing Tube | A piece of free-spinning, stainless steel tubing covers the threaded stud, enabling stabilization of the extension. Simply grasp the tubing with a finger and thumb to minimize pad chatter, torque-steer, or extension wobble.

Backing Plate Mount | A conically shaped coupling nut (essentially a long nut) accepts 5/16-24 male-thread backing plates. Hand-tightening of the backing plate is sufficient to keep it securely mounted to the extension, while removal of the plate is similarly easy. No wrench needed.

Add a variety of Rupes® Buffing Pads.
You'll be ready to tackle just about any polishing task if you've got a set of Rupes® Buffing Pads on hand. A strong discount is applied to the pads when purchased with this extension. Rupes Foam Pads are notoriously long lasting, and feature a flared side for maximum contouring ability (4 versions available). Rupes Wool Pads deliver for a smooth & controlled feel (2 versions available).

Add spare backing plates.
Although the included backing plates are extremely durable, they are small in size. More often than not, replacements are purchased simply because a plate has gone-a-missing!
